The short answer

For most visitors who are already at Uluru with a free day, Kings Canyon is worth the trip, and the reasons are specific. Tourism NT calls the Rim Walk one of the most iconic hikes in Australia, and describes the canyon as having 100 m high sandstone walls and palm-filled crevices.1,3 It is a different landscape from Uluru's single monolith, and it rewards people who like to walk.

The cost is real, and it is mostly time. Tourism NT says Kings Canyon lies 300 km from Uluru and is only 3 hours drive away, and a day tour from Ayers Rock Resort covers that distance twice inside 12 hours.2,3 If your trip is short, those hours compete with sunrise and sunset at Uluru.

The sensible question is therefore not whether the canyon is good but whether it is good for you. The rest of this page sets out who it suits, how it compares with the walks near Uluru and when you should leave it out.

Each park publishes its own grades, so the labels are not a single scale from us. Hot-weather closures apply to the rim and the valley.4,17,18

What the day actually gives you

A day at the canyon is built around one walk. The rim loop is 6 km and usually takes around 3 to 4 hours, and halfway round you reach the Garden of Eden rockhole, which Tourism NT describes as tranquil and surrounded by rare plant life.4,11 The views along the top reach across the desert and down into the sheltered creek.4

The day also gives you a choice, which is what makes it suit mixed groups. Our listing offers the Rim Walk or an easier, shorter walk on the canyon floor, and Tourism NT grades the floor walk Level 2, easy, at 2 km return.12,5 People who would never attempt the rim can still see the cliffs from below.

Visitors who have done it speak well of it. The listing is rated 4.6 from 629 reviews, and all ten of the newest English reviews on file give five stars, praising the guides for knowledge and friendliness. Reviewers call the day long but worth it, and one says the climb at the start is worth the effort.

Rim Walk or Valley of the Winds

The Kings Canyon Rim Walk vs Valley of the Winds comparison is the closest one, because the Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta is also Grade 4. Parks Australia describes it as steep, rocky and difficult in places, with a full circuit of 7.4 km that takes 3 to 4 hours.17,14,16 The Kings Canyon rim is 6 km, in the same time range and the same grade.4

The difference lies in how each handles the heat. The Valley of the Winds walk closes at the first lookout from 11 am when the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36 degrees Celsius and above, while the rim must be started before 9am at the same figure.18,6 Both are morning walks in summer, and you cannot do both on the same hot morning.

There is also a shorter way into Kata Tjuta. Parks Australia lists the Karu lookout walk as 1 hour and 2.2 km return, which is a taster that the rim does not offer.13 The rim is an all-or-nothing walk of 3 to 4 hours, with the creek floor as the easy alternative.4,5

Kings Canyon and Uluru for the same days

If you have a few days in the Red Centre, the usual shape is Uluru first and the canyon second. Tourism NT suggests that visitors short of time fly directly into Uluru and spend 2 nights there and 1 night at Kings Canyon.7 Its itinerary puts the canyon on day 2 and the rim early on day 3, with the drive back to Uluru stopping at Curtin Springs for lunch.8,10

The Uluru base walk is the comparison on the other side. Parks Australia grades it Grade 3, a loop track of 10.6 km that takes 3 hours 30 minutes, and advises finishing before 11.00 am in hot weather.15,24 It is longer but gentler than the rim, and it sits next to the rock you came to see.

If time is tight, the choice is between a day at the canyon and a day at Uluru and Kata Tjuta. The canyon gives you the rim and the long drive, and Uluru gives you its walks, sunrise and sunset. Neither replaces the other, and travelers who ask whether Kings Canyon is worth it should first count the days they have.

A Red Centre plan

How a short Red Centre trip can run

  1. Arrival

    Uluru and Kata Tjuta

Tourism NT's plan flies into Uluru and spends 2 nights there.7

  2. Next day

    Drive to the canyon

The itinerary stops at Karrke and adds a helicopter flight.8

  3. That evening

    Sunset at the resort

The itinerary ends the day with sunset from the resort.8

  4. Next morning

    The rim, early

Tourism NT suggests finishing the rim before 10am.9

  5. Afternoon

    Back to Uluru

The drive back stops at Curtin Springs for lunch.10

Things to do besides the walk

The canyon area offers more than the rim, and these are the kinds of kings canyon activities that fill a longer stay. Tourism NT describes the Light Towers installation of light and sound in the desert sands by the artist Bruce Munro, and a scenic helicopter experience that shows the canyon, the Garden of Eden and the Lost City from the air.22,23

Karrke offers a 1-hour cultural tour at its Aboriginal cultural experience near the canyon, and Tourism NT suggests stopping there on the way for an overview of the local culture.21,25 A 15-minute helicopter flight over the canyon is also a listing, from $140, rated 4.8 from 93 reviews.

The Light Towers and the helicopter suit a stay better than a single day. Tourism NT's own plan for day 2 pairs the drive with Karrke, a helicopter flight and sunset from the resort.8

If you go

A short checklist

Decide3

  • Count your days: the road is 300 km each way2
  • Pick the rim or the easier walk for each person in the group
  • Buy your NT Parks Visitor Pass if you are not an NT resident19

Prepare3

  • Sturdy closed shoes for the rim
  • Water and a hat20
  • Be ready for an early start

Add3

  • A 1-hour cultural tour at Karrke if you stay near the canyon21
  • The Light Towers installation after dark22
  • A helicopter flight for the view from above23

When to skip it

There are honest reasons to leave Kings Canyon out. If you cannot start early, the heat rule may stop you: on a day forecast at 36 degrees Celsius or higher, entry to the rim is not permitted after 9am.6 In midsummer, the average daily high at the nearest station is already above that line.26

If the steps are a barrier, the floor walk exists, but it gives a different experience from the rim. Tourism NT says the Kings Creek Walk is a 2 km return walk graded Level 2, easy, with a raised viewing platform.12,5 Someone who wants the full rim and cannot manage the climb will be disappointed.

And if you dislike long road days, count the road. The drive is around 3 hours each way, and there are no taxis or shuttles at the canyon.3,27 Visitors who would rather spend those hours at Uluru or Kata Tjuta are making a reasonable choice, and the decision helper below turns it into two questions.

What the reviewers of the day tour add

Reviews are the closest thing to a second opinion. The ten newest English reviews of our listing give five stars, and they praise the guides by name for knowledge and friendliness. Several describe the walk as challenging, and one says the climb at the start is the hardest part and worth it.

They also describe small pleasures that a guidebook might skip: a nap on the coach in the dark, a hot breakfast, wild camels and horses beside the road, a salt lake and a stop at Curtin Springs. Those details are part of what the day is, and they come with the drive you might otherwise count as a cost.

The overall score is 4.6 from 629 reviews. Reviews cannot tell you whether the day suits you, but they do show that visitors who go on it tend to be glad they did, which is the best single answer to the question in the title.
